Candice is homeless but her kids may not know it.
It started last year when Candice had no other place to go, so she packed her kids into her van, decorated it like a bedroom and told them they were going to have an adventure. During the time they lived in the van, they’d head to the prettiest spots to watch the sunset and went on nature walks together. She took her kids to all the free events she could find around the city. She bought dollar store items to set up a tea party and they’d sip their drinks together in the back of their van.
A year ago, Candice fell on hard financial times and had to choose between paying her rent and paying the electric bill. She chose to pay the rent because she didn’t want to lose her home —and so, the lights went out. She lit candles around their house on dark nights so her kids could do their homework. Any extra money she had went to her ailing car so she could hold onto her job.
Things got worse for her when her landlord took her to court, claiming that she had damaged the rental she stayed in. Luckily for Candice, she had photos and was able to prove herself to the judge and the landlord’s charges were dismissed. She had to move out, but now she has the legal fees from court and rent the landlord charged her for the last month, totaling $1900.
Candice began applying for rentals, but with the $1900 expense lingering, she’s not eligible, even though she doesn’t have an eviction on her record. Candice began to struggle with anxiety and it was becoming hard for her to eat. She started losing weight—what was she going to do?
Eventually, Candice came to stay with her aunt and uncle. She has a steady job at a hotel, cleaning rooms for $10 an hour while her kids are at home doing virtual school.
Friends, this is an ask. Can we help Candice get a fresh start?
I know—there’s millions of needs and good things we can give our money to. I’m asking for Candice and her kids, a family in our own backyard.
